The purpose of this assignment is for you to critically consider your own life experience growing up – in particular reflecting on your early years of life within the period from birth – eight years old. In reflecting on your early years, consider your family/cultural practices, beliefs and ideologies, the adult child relationships (power relations) that dominated your childhood experiences, opportunities or lack thereof for agency and voice, and consideration of your rights as a child. You MUST discuss how your own childhood compares to that of contemporary childhoods (post 2020).

You need to comment on the positioning of child / image of child in relation to your childhood experience and that of contemporary childhood.

Your essay must incorporate several of the key theories AND concepts such as gender stereotypes, sexuality, identity, family structure, culture, ethnicity, class, environment, education, health, religion, and language and how these relate to social construction and experience of childhood.

You are also required to include a wide range of media/artefacts that illustrate and support the comparison between the two generational experiences. You are expected to incorporate photographs, stills from movies ,stories from other family members, draw on news articles, music and other popular cultural icons from both childhood periods to put each childhood into context and to support your comparative discussion.
