PART C1 – DESIGN PROJECT: DESIGN DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF A DOMESTIC SHED
This design project is particularly focused on developing an understanding of structural load paths and the design process. To successfully complete this project, you will be required to design specific structural members of a domestic shed. The Learnings from Part A and Part B are to be incorporated into Part C1.
To complete this assessment, you will be required to prepare a written report that identifies and explains a practical problem to be solved. It will describe a suitable design solution and include an evaluation and explanation of why this
is the most appropriate design solution.
You will also be required to prepare a video presentation of maximum duration four minutes which includes images and narration. The images and narration will be used to explain your research, findings and evaluation as well as highlight what knowledge you gained from this investigative experience.
The following details are to be read in conjunction with Figure 1.
a. Dimensions Span (S) width of shed= 8.7m
Eaves height (H) higher side = 5.4m
Overall shed length = 14.4m
Bay spacing = 7.2m
Roof pitch = 5 degrees
Purpose of Floor that Column C1 and Beam B2 supports: File Rooms
b. Roof sheeting is to be Lysaght Trimdek
c. Assume any cross section for purlin. Purlin spacing does need to be calculated and also ensure the spacing is within the relevant limit for the Roof Sheeting.
d. Ceiling, Insulation, Flooring – research and make selection
e. Columns and Rafters – UC for Columns and UB for Beams are suggested
f. Assume that the columns are fixed at their base. All Connections for B2 are pinned. Connections between the rafters (e.g. B1) and external columns are rigid “fixed”.

Part C Report Specifications
Structure your report to address the following questions: (Recommended word counts are in brackets) In your report, you must state any assumptions you have made.
Part C1: Introduction:
• Briefly Discuss the different structural elements of the domestic shed in this project
• Research and discuss the different possible loads that can act on the shed.
• Research and discuss the different types of beam-to-beam and beam-to-column Connections. Explain the differences between simple and rigid connection.
• Research and discuss the difference between the Bolted vs Welded Connections and the limitation of each type.
Part C1: Load paths and bracing systems for Shed in Figure 1. (250 words) This may incorporate learning from Assessment 2 Part A.
• Research and describe the load paths for gravitational and lateral loads, draw and explain the bracing layout.

and weaknesses, which may include comments on structural elements not designed (e.g. Rafter B1 and external
columns) compared to the members that were designed. Apply the knowledge you have gained in this course and
from ‘UO Structures 1’ to justify your thinking.
